CMC Magnetics on June 26 announced it received class-A verification for its 1x HD-DVD-R SL (high-definition DVD-R single-sided single-layer) discs with 15GB storage capacity from the DVD Forum last week, while Ritek indicated it obtained the same level of verification in late May of this year.
Class-A verification indicates that a product meets the minimum specifications laid out by the DVD Forum.
CMC and Ritek have started shipments of 1x HD-DVD-R SL discs in small volumes this month, according to the two companies.
However, second-tier makers of optical discs in Taiwan, including Prodisc Technology, Lead Data and Gigastorage, are still in the R&D phase of next-generation blue-laser disc technology and may begin volume production around the end of this year or early next year, industry sources pointed out.
