Although second-tier makers of optical discs are making efforts to upgrade production of DVD+R/-R discs from 4x or 8x to 16x, leading makers, especially CMC Magnetics and Ritek, are expected to account for all of Taiwan's production of 16x DVD+R/-R discs next year, according to industry sources.
A high technology threshold and capital investment are limiting factors for second-tier makers, the sources indicated. Second-tier makers are able to produce 16x DVD+R/-R discs compatible with only a single burn speed but incapable of making 16x DVD+R/-R discs compatible with multiple burn speeds, the sources pointed out.
CMC and Ritek expect to have 16x DVD+R/-R discs account for 100% and at least 90%, respectively, of their output of DVD+R/-R discs in the first half of 2006, according to the two companies.
