Some second-tier and smaller manufacturers of optical discs recently increased their OEM quotations for CD-R discs to US$0.10, up from US$0.08-0.09, on increased costs of polycarbonate (PC), a key component.
Amid an extremely competitive market, the increased price level of PC, which has risen to more than US$3 per kilogram, has forced many small makers of CD-R discs in China to leave the market and some second-tier and smaller competitors in Taiwan to decrease production.
However, some smaller Taiwan makers have succeeded in securing higher prices for CD-R discs from their OEM customers, to reflect the increased cost.
In related news, due to oversupply, OEM quotations for 4x DVD+R/-R discs will not rise above US$0.30 (£17), the makers said.
