OEM prices of mainstream 8x8 DVD Dual (+R/-R and/or +RW/-RW) burners have slipped by more than 20% to below US$100 (£56), down from their launch price of US$120-130 (£67-£73) in the first quarter, according to Taiwanese makers of optical disc drives.
One explanation for the price drop is that since the second quarter is traditionally a down period for optical disc drives, channel distributors will have higher inventory levels and procure smaller volumes, the Taiwanese makers indicated. Another reason is that 8x DVD DL (single-sided double-layer discs) burners and 12x DVD burners are beginning to be produced, so distributors are hesitant to order 8x8 DVD Dual burners, the Taiwanese makers added.
However, the current yield rates for 8x DVD DL and 12x DVD burners are not satisfactorily high and OEM prices are as high as US$130-150, the Taiwanese makers pointed out.
